Leadership Programme for Female Professors

fig.: colourbox.de

The leadership programme offers female professors within the Berlin University Alliance the opportunity to expand their skill sets as leaders and become part of an interdisciplinary network. The leadership programme is a flagship programme of the Berlin Leadership Academy.

The Program

The one-year programme is aimed at the individual and targeted personal development of female professors within the Berlin University Alliance. Each year, it provides twelve vacancies which are filled proportionally by members of the affiliated universities. The participants of the programme will closely reflect upon leadership in science, participate in a one-to-one coaching and engage in networking activities. They are accompanied by select coaches and trainers of the leadership programme.

The leadership programme consists of three components:

  • 6 workshops on the topic of leadership in science as well as further follow-up workshops
  • A leadership style analysis and up to 5 one-to-one coaching sessions
  • 4 networking events

The programme is open to all female scientists of the Berlin University Alliance currently holding a position of responsibility within their work context ( e.g. tenured female professors in W2/C3 and W3/C4 positions, except for S-professorships) and who wish to expand and develop their individual leadership expertise.

Programme participants are selected by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Berlin Leadership Academy via a standardised procedure upon direct application. The selection is based on criteria such as seniority and scientific field to ensure the diversification of participants.

Berlin Leadership Academy

The Berlin Leadership Academy coordinantes, expands and refines the leadership development within the Berlin University Alliance in order to strengthen the alliance as a whole.

The academy targets senior managers of the four alliance partners in particular. It supports managers in further developing their leadership skills and networking with colleagues within the alliance. In addition, the Berlin Leadership Academy works towards developing joint leadership principles within the alliance.

On its professional development plattform, the Berlin Leadership Academy unites the further training programmes aimed at senior staff of all BUA universities.

In addition to the leadership programme, the Berlin Leadership Academy offers three other flagship programmes, each with a different focus, open to leaders in positions of responsibility of Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité Berlin.

Furhter information on the Berlin Leadership Academy can be found unter www.berlin-university-alliance.de/bla.

Leadership for Excellence (Freie Universität Berlin)
The FU programme will help participants to improve their behavior in complex management structures, to be goal-oriented and to organise processes of change successfully. In five half-day workshops and four evening events the participants find out how they can act as managers in non-hierarchical contexts. Further information on the FU programme can be found here.

Effective and Eficient Decision Making for Leaders (Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin)
The flagship program “Effective and efficient decision making - lead confidently in challenging situations" (program manager: Dr. Nathalie Huber) supports participants in improving their decision-making quality, speed and sustainability, and thus a confident handling of indeterminacy and complex situations. Further information on the Charité programme can be found here.

Enhancing Leader and Follower Strengths (Technische Universität Berlin)
The programme guides professors from the four network partners in identifying and activating their strengths. The participants develop an individual performance and resource management strategy in order to successfully tackle complex leadership tasks. It consists of a two day workshop, a follow-up series, and an accompanying programme over a period of half a year. Further information on the TU programme can be found here.
